Assessment time!!!

This semester I have learnt A LOT!! I’ve never been very good with computers. If you asked me what a HTML, RSS or CSS was last year and I would have stared at you blankly.

Last term-

Blogger: The blogs have been fun to use and we have learnt how to change the appearance add gadgets, and make html’s, which was really beneficial. I have since used html’s in everyday internet postings and now have a better understanding of how they work and what they do!
Although I probably will not continue blogging, I can understand how it is interesting and fun. Not only for the average person to have a ‘internet presence’ but for companies and jobs as well- eg, an artist may have a blog and do commissions for people- thus reaching a wider audience that they wouldn’t have been able to without the internet.

Flickr: has become quite important in my daily routine!! It is really handy for posting up work in progress and video’s for animation. If we had no learnt this I would still probably be wondering how to do this!!

Delicious: Is really handy! I am always forgetting the url’s for websites, (especially all the ones we have had to keep for this subject! Next time I will make NO variations in user names and passwords!) so its really neat to have them all on one website! Especially when you are on different computers! I have given the old ‘favourite’ option on m computer the flick and am now using Delicious instead!

This Term:

This term has been mostly about Counters, RSS and FTP.  Before these lessons, I knew nothing about any of them!!! I have always wondered how websites were made and different ways to do them. I have greatly enjoyed using iweb!!!  It is awesome to be able to change and drag and drop images and text to create your very own web page!

FTP: was a bit challenging at the time, but got the hang of it! It is a network protocol that is used to exchange and manipulate files over a computer network and internet. I was introduced to Fetch, the FTP client we were using, and learnt how to add things into it in order to create a website.

Athene: I have learnt that you DO not delete your Public html by accident...!!!! It causes much stress and anguish! :P

RSS: is pretty damn cool! It allows you to be updated on your favourite blogs and sites with RSS feeds on your own site! This mean’s you have the convenience to be able to see the updates in one place! Before this class I knew nothing about these and didn’t even know they existed!!

So over all, everything has been new to me and I have actually learnt a great deal!!

Techonorati

Wow!! Techonorati is weird and temperamental!! When we first signed up for it, no ones worked! About a week later, finally it seems to have gotten over its hissy fit!!
Personally I don’t see the point in it for people like me who are not very into blogs. However, I can see that it could help companies, with knowing who is looking at your products and what they are saying etc.

At the moment my rank and authority is 0.....

Week 10- Counters and RSS

Counters are pretty cool! They are little application things that you can place on your website that count the amount of ‘hits’ and views your website gets. This can be really beneficial to the owner of the site to know how popular and how often people are looking at their site.
Another web analysis tool is
Google Analytics which allows you to see how visitors interact with your site to gain a better understanding on what is and isn’t working with your website.

Rss (really simple syndication) are web feeds that publish frequently updated works such as blogs. RSS is good for keeping up to date on certain webpage’s of interest and a good way to keep everything organized. They benefit readers who want to be able to view their favorite feeds in one place.

I put the RSS feeds to my Delicious, My blog, the MPI blog- on my blog and my domain iweb page. I had trouble with the google reader through.. I couldn’t put a RSS to it on my blog? But I did subscribe to them all on there instead.…

Still No Athene page… >_<

Athene Rant/ funny!!! :D

EDIT!!

Hahahahahaha- So it seems I was a loser and accidently DELETED my public html which was the problem all along!.... Woops!! *slaps head* So much silly stress for nothing!! :P

GAAAAHHH!!!
My Athene account/ page is STILL NOT THERE!!!!!

So now I can’t put up my iweb… and now I cant post links to it… And now I don’t know what to do!......... :(

Week 9- FTP and Athene

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Is a network protocol used to exchange and manipulate files over the internet.
It promotes the sharing of files, encourages indirect use of remote computers, shields the user from variations in file storage systems among different hosts and to transfer data reliability and efficiently.
However, FTP is particularly unsecure method of transferring files because there is no method specified for transferring Data in an encrypted Fashion. This means that transferred files on FTP can be intercepted by anyone on the same network.
This problem can be overcome by using SFTP (SSH file transfer protocol) or FTPS…

In MPI we have been using  the FTP client  called Fetch (which has the cutest little picture of a puppy biting a floppy disk!)

We are also using a cool simple website program called iweb! Which is a lot of fun!!! I love how easy it is to use and how many little cool templates you can alter!! It is so simple to just add stuff and delete things-, which is awesome!

I WOULD post a link to my iWeb but unfortunately it has disappeared!? WHYYYYYYYYY???!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? *goes and cries in a corner*

Revision- Assessment Blog!

I’ve never been a super computer wiz, and have never really used the internet for more than just searching and emailing, so this subject has opened my eyes to a lot of new things! So far we’ve been introduced to-*Blogger, which could become quite addictive if uni life wasn’t so busy! *Google and all the things I didn’t know about it!- Like Google maps, translator and what not! *Flickr, which has become very handy for posting and sharing things for animation, such as story boards! *Delicious, which has become very very handy in helping me remember all of these sites! * And all about Templates and HTML and CSS- which, although I found it hard and confusing, was pretty beneficial and interesting! I have 5 Blog posts! I think my most interesting posts are these ones- Link and Link
On my blog, I have changed things such as colour, text, size of text, the side bar etc. I like how it turned out! Before it was rather bland and just many shades of greens and brown- now the headings are distinctly recognizable from the rest of the text, it has more colour appeal and is just a lot more exciting than before! I kept the same template because I rather liked it.Here are some comments I have left on other peoples blogs-
Link
Link
I’ve tagged a few things- such as Deviantart, photobucket and a link to Harry Potter Puppet pals on youtube! Some interesting things I’ve added to my blog is the NHL info status update box- which is very cool! Living in Australia it’s hard to get information on NHL other than the net, so it’s cool to have it on my blog! The Star wars Photo Gallery is also pretty cool! Now I have geeky Star Wars photos at my disposal on my Blog!I’ve also added a little Poll asking whether or not you believe in Aliens! On My del.icio.us account I have 21 bookmarks. The majority are other class mates blogs, but some are other interesting and cool websites! I have quite a lot of art and animation websites, such as Deviantart, and the Pixar Website. This is because I am doing Animation and love to know what’s going on in the industry and love to be inspired and look at other forms of interesting art.I also have a few movie sites- because I like movies and love to know what latest ones are coming out!My three favorite web pages are-
Deviantart a site to upload your artwork and look at other peoples.
Mr Picasso Head
a site that lets you do your own Picasso style picture!
Pixar
the official pixar site- which is always amazing to see what’s happening with them!! On my Flickr account I have 21 pictures. My three favorite images are-
Link These amazing MP3 shoes!
Link
the picture of Murphy, the head I made from Clay! Annnd-
Link The amazing sculptures by Lee bul!

Week 6- Templates

Wow. I've actually found this weeks lesson really challenging! I've always found HTML and CSS stuff really confusing! To me it just looks like a whole heap of mumbo jumbo!!! Though with some exploring I managed to change a few things!
The template option gave me a small selection of options to change from the premade template I chose. Things like colour, font style, font size etc. I used this for the majority of my changes actully- because I was more comfortable with this way- as you could actually SEE what you were changing, as well as it being simple and easy. I changed the background colour, text colour, Side bar and all that jazz!!
Template options will not let you change the general style of your layout and site however...
I changed the font size the HTML/ CSS way to make it bigger. Wasnt as hard as I thought.
I can see that there would be many advantages using CSS- for example, for extra personalisation- to change the very layout of your site- making your own websites- not having to be stuck with boring pre-made templates- fixing glitches in sites etc... I however probably wont use it too often if I can help it!
Accessability is important with a website to make it extra user friendly for the general public. Because the internet is so huge- it is nice and beneficial to be able to make it available and helpful to a wider audience- depending on the contense of the site of course (I think I'm just writing crap now! :P). Eg- having larger font, brigher colours and audio for the visually impaired.
In conclusion- This Blog is done... :D
